What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder of the peripheral nervous system, which includes all of the nerves that connect to and from the brain and spinal cord. It's characterized by pain, tingling, burning sensations, numbness in the extremities—hands and feet—and weakness in some muscles.

Depending on the individual, peripheral neuropathy can have many causes, including physical trauma, infection, metabolic problems, and exposure to toxins or medications. In some cases, the cause is unknown. Treatment usually begins with a diagnosis and includes blood tests and imaging scans.
